IELTS Listening Tips

It’s IELTS month here at WSE and we’ve managed to come up with 5 top tips to help you achieve the score you’re aiming for! Let’s check top 5 IELTS listening tips for learner you should know before start preparing for IELTS.

Do not leave any answers blank

There are 2 reasons for this. First, your guess may very well be correct, especially if it’s a multiple-choice question. Second, there is a danger if you leave a blank that you write the answers in the wrong boxes on the answer sheet and it can be a disaster.

Look for clues in the question

A common type of question is to fill in a table; in this type of question, you will often find answer clues by looking at the other information in the table. In particular, look at the row and column headers: if, for example, the header says “equipment” and some of the filled boxes say “paperclips” and “cardboard”, you have a good idea of what you should listen. for.

Read before listening – predict the response

One of the difficulties of the exam is that you are not only listening, but reading the question and writing the answer at the same time. A simple tip is to read the questions before you listen so you know what you are listening to. It’s a difficult skill to master, but sometimes it can be useful to try to predict the type of response you’re looking for: is it a name, for example, or a number?

Read as you listen in the recording- focus on the whole question given.

A lot of mistakes are made not because you haven’t listened well, but because you’re not focusing on the issue. As you listen, focus on the precise wording of the question.

Don’t leave the writing until the end

Sometimes candidates leave the written part at the end, thinking that they will remember what they heard. In my experience, it almost never works: there’s a lot of information, you’re stressed, and most importantly, after each listen you should move on to the next set of questions to read them.
